How to Run the Diagnostic Tools

To run the diagnostics, from the extracted files choose one of the follow steps:

  1. Double click on the execute_IBMCognos8.bat
    • a DOS command prompt will appear to show the status of the diagnostic as the diagnostic is running
    • This is the recommended way
  2. From a DOS command prompt type the following
    • java -jar IBMCognos8.jar
    • a DOS command prompt will appear to show the status of the diagnostic as the diagnostic is running
  3. Double click on IBMCognos8.jar
    • this will run the diagnostic in the background
    • a DOS command prompt will not appear to show the status of the diagnostic as the diagnostic is running

IBM Cognos Diagnostic Tools in Action

Once the diagnostic is executed, a check box with a choice of properties appears:

  • Authentication Information
  • Printer Information
  • JAVA_HOME setting
  • Processes
  • Files
  • Email Issues
  • displays the files cogroot.link and cogconfig.prefs
  • displays the IBM Cognos Configuration
By default the properties that require an IBM Cognos 8 install path are not checked. By selecting the button “Select All”, all the fields will be selected. Click on the “Browse” button to select the IBM Cognos 8 install path.

The “Save Current Settings” button will save all the information selected. There will be no need to renter you choices each time this diagnostic is executed.

Once all is complete in the dialog box, click on the OK button to run the diagnostics.

Viewing Results in Tabbed View at a Later Time

It is very easy to view the results in a tabbed view at a later time. Every time the IBM Cognos 8 Diagnostic is downloaded, a folder named GUI_Cognos8 is also automatically downloaded.


Go to the GUI_Cognos8 folder. This folder holds 3 files, a batch, a jar file and a PDF file. Clicking on the batch file called Execute_GUI_IBMCognos8.bat. The following window will appear.

Click on the browse button to browse to locate the IBM Cognos 8 results file in text format. Then click OK. Diagnostic results will appear in a tabbed view.

Downloading and Extracting the IBMCognos8.tar:

Choose IBM Cognos 8 Diagnostic for UNIX under the label IBM Cognos 8 Diagnostic, and accept the legal disclaimer. Then you will be prompted to save the IBMCognos8_ux.tar file on your local windows directory.

FTP the IBMCognos8_ux.tar file in binary to a UNIX box.

On UNIX, using the Command: tar xpf IBMCognos8_ux.tar

The following files are unzipped:

  • IBMCognos8_ux.jar
    • The java code
  • execute_IBMCongos8_ux.sh
    • Typing this command will execute the java code
  • IBMCognos8diagnostic_ux.txt
    • A document to explain what this IBM Cognos8 Diagnostic retrieves and how to run it, also includes legal disclaimer
  • IBMCognos8_ux.properties
    • To remember where the entered IBM Cognos 8 Install Location,
  • Directory Called GUI_IBMCognosUX which includes 2 files
    • GUI_IBMCognos8_ux.jar
    • execute_GUI_IBMCognos8_ux.sh
      • This is where you can view your results in the GUI tabbed view at a later time.

Conclusion - Diagnostic Tools
